Anxiety over Decision Making – Don’t be a Deer in the Headlights

anxiety over decision

Some people can make an important decision quickly and lightly. Ask them “how did you choose to do that so easily ?” They will answer, “It felt right.”  And they move forward, confidently.

Perhaps it was unknowingly, but they have relied upon their unconscious mind – whose objective is to protect us from external predators.  And our conscious, critical mind can be at times…predatory. Certainly, it is if it causes us to analyze and equivocate endlessly, like a deer in the headlights.

By the time they make a decision, that situation has changed significantly.  By the time they ‘see the light,’ it is too late.  That light already changed – three times while they stand scared in the intersection. Or, they got flattened.

They crossed that street only to learn the opportunity remained on the other side, or vice-versa.  They have relied upon their conscious, critical mind – which is often not exactly our best friend. You know, that mind – the one with the critical voices.

Yes, “look before you leap” is still a legit rule. But sometimes you have to jump before the headlights reach you. Your unconscious mind was already doing the looking,  just like it always does when you are daydreaming while driving down the highway and missed the exit miles back – and remained safely on the road.

What is the difference between relying upon the unconscious versus the conscious or critical mind, though, when it comes to making an important decision?  These are factors to consider:

  • Your conscious mind keeps track of seven bits of information per second
    • But your unconscious mind keeps track of MILLIONS of things all at once
  • Your conscious mind knows all the details
    • But your unconscious mind gets the WHOLE picture.
  • And your conscious mind thinks it’s in control
    • But your unconscious mind is ULTIMATELY in control
  • And your conscious mind has a narrow focus
    • But your unconscious mind sees EVERYTHING

Hypnotherapy is the most effective tool to access your unconscious mind.
